Social Identity Activity
This 50 - 90 minute voluntary activity is designed to help participants begin their journey of figuring out their place in the world by realizing that their own individual identity includes race and that this identity will influence their interactions with others who do not share the same background.
Social Identity Pie Chart Activity Objectives:
- To help participants gain self-awareness regarding their own social identities and how their personal identity characteristics may influence interactions with others who do not share their racial background.
- To discuss how identity characteristics may influence our beliefs, values, attitudes, perceptions, and interactions.
- To highlight the influence of power in intercultural interactions.
Participants are expected to complete the Social Identity Activity – Homework.pdf before participating in order to maximize the time spent in discussion. Participants will spend about 20 minutes discussing their charts with four reflection questions to guide them. The remainder of the session will be spent with the whole group discussing whatever points or themes about racial identity seem most salient to the group.
