BRIDGE is a five-week intensive summer program designed to prepare students who are underrepresented in engineering fields for the rigor of engineering curriculum at UConn, to introduce them to careers in engineering, and to familiarize students with the University of Connecticut and the college experience as a whole.
UConn Student Support Services (SSS) provides students who are first-generation to college and/or from under-served populations with access to the university, with services to help them achieve their goal of graduation, and with programming designed to support their academic, professional, and personal growth at UConn and beyond. Each year, approximately 300 students are accepted to UConn through SSS at the main campus in Storrs and at the Avery Point, Hartford, Stamford, and Waterbury regional campuses.
The Asiantation Mentoring Program (AMP) is an award-winning peer education program that assists incoming Asian American students adapt to their new college environment. New students are paired with continuing students who serve as a resource and assist them through their first year. Throughout the year AMP hosts various workshops- academic success, career preparation, and outreach opportunities-with each catering specifically to the incoming UConn student. The Asiantation Mentoring Program also provides new students the opportunity to connect with other students, faculty, and staff and to learn how to get involved with the Asian American Cultural Center and its affiliated student organizations.
Fostering Academics, Maturity, Independence, Leadership, Empowerment & Excellence (F.A.M.I.L.E.E.), a program through the Rainbow Center, pairs new students with continuing students during their first or transfer year, involving group activities and one-on-one meetings. This program is designed to assist students in their first year at UConn-Storrs including regional campus and transfer students who are new to the Storrs campus with their transition by pairing them with peer mentors
The METAS Program (Mentoring, Educating, and Training for Academic Success) is designed to assist first-year and transfer students with their college transition by pairing them with a peer mentor who provides guidance and support throughout the mentee’s first year at UConn. Benefits to participation include learning about resources and opportunities at UConn, attending educational, cultural and social events sponsored by the Puerto Rican/Latin American Cultural Center (PRLACC) as well as other departments throughout campus, and meeting other students who are going through the same experience.
Our goals are: to enhance Latinx student retention; to create a strong sense of community; to provide leadership opportunities and to provide a support system for Latinx freshmen and transfer students as they transition into college life.
The PA2SS (Peer African Americans Sustaining Success) Peer Mentor Program was established for African American freshman and transfer students and upper-class mentors. The program will seek to improve the academic performance, retention, and graduation rates of African American students. The PA2SS program is a 1 credit course that is offered during the spring and fall semester of the academic year. Faculty/staff mentoring and grade monitoring will be a feature of the program. Peer educators participate in a 2-day peer education training session and are enrolled in the mentor section of the 1 credit class.
REACH (Resources in Education and Advocacy for Current Huskies) Mentees are first-year, transfer, or newly registered students who are beginning their experience at UConn and with Center for Students with Disabilities. They are students who want the opportunity to build connections with a returning student and who would benefit from additional support in their transition to UConn.Being a REACH Mentee will provide students the opportunity to connect with their peers and help foster a network of support and community for students with disabilities at UConn. Mentees will meet with their Mentors at least once a month but are encouraged to keep in contact more frequently to make the most of their experience.
The Women in STEM (WiSTEM) Mentoring Program of the Women’s Center is an initiative designed to support underclasswomen pursuing STEM degrees through the mentorship of their upperclasswomen peers. The program spans the full academic year and is structured around monthly meetings designed to provide both the mentor and mentee with resources to flourish in the STEM fields.
The ISSS International Graduate Buddy Program pairs new international graduate students with existing UConn graduate student “buddies.”
Buddies may be American or international students and their mission is to help welcome you to campus and participate in at least three campus activities or events during your first term.
